The New Lexicon I.
Philosophy of Music Theory [research group]
—
WORKING METHOD
The residency is organised around sustained exchange rather than one-way instruction. Participants bring theoretical practices and projects situated within particular repertoires, histories, methods, and questions. The task of the group is to establish conditions under which those projects can be examined with rigour, generosity, openness, and conceptual precision.
Presentation and discussion may draw on essays, scores, recordings, transcriptions, corpora, software, visualisations, diagrams, lectures, pedagogical materials, performances, experiments, or hybrid forms. No single medium is privileged as a form of evidence. Materials are considered in relation to the questions they raise, the operations they perform, and the forms of understanding they make possible.
Participants are encouraged to define their terms, identify the assumptions informing their methods, clarify relations between concepts and procedures, and distinguish claims from the evidence supporting them. Discussion will attend not only to what a project says about music, but also to how its premises are embodied in its objects, representations, scales, exclusions, rhetoric, and conditions of reception.
Critical engagement is understood as a constructive practice. Feedback should neither affirm a project nor measure it against a methodological norm. It should help reveal the consequences of its choices, identify tensions between claims and procedures, locate assumptions, test the reach of generalisations, and open paths for development. Participants are expected to respond to others with the seriousness they expect for their own work.
The inquiry is plural. Its purpose is not to establish disciplinary consensus, prescribe adherence to a philosophical tradition, or subordinate musical experience to theoretical explanation. Productive disagreement, methodological difference, and conceptual tension are conditions of collective research. The programme seeks a discourse in which incompatible positions can be stated clearly, examined fairly, and transformed through encounter.
